Books I Embraced, Devoured, and Loved in 2020

2020 Best of Books image-India Currents

I was tickled when India Currents Magazine asked me to compile a “Best Of” list of South Asian-centric and -related books I read during 2020. The request came at an opportune time as I was trying to recall all the books I’d read this year that I had and hadn’t reviewed. As fate would have it, I was about to dip into the last one that made it onto the list. What I came up with was a list of 11 titles (and 1 bonus title that I’d read in 2019 and led me to two of the 2020 titles). Most of the books were published in 2020, but publication year wasn’t a factor for the piece. This allowed me to widen the list and include something for everyone from younger readers to adults.Along with a fascinatingly-composed collection of interconnected YA short stories by 13 YA authors, I included titles by extraordinary authors–some who made their debut in 2020 and others who have added to their already amazing bibiographies: Soniah Kamal, Sonali Dev, Devi S Laskar, Megha Majumdar, Sandhya Menon, Mary Anne Mohanraj, Munira Premji, Sejal Shah, Thrity Umrigar, and Fareed Zakaria.
